Date ideas in Goa: river sunsets, candlelit tables and early boats for two

The best dates in Goa are simple and well timed: dinner by the river as the sun goes down, candlelight in an old Goan house, a ferry to an island for breakfast, or a dark beach under the stars. Most depend less on money than on getting the hour right.

Here are our ideas for two: evenings first, then mornings, then the ones that need more planning, and a couple of places for later. From Siolim, where Rivara sits, the river dinners are in the village itself.

Evenings: a sunset, then dinner

Through the season the sun sets between about 6 PM and 7 PM, so an evening date starts early. Book the table for the light, not for dinner time.

Thalassa, Fireback and Hosa all sit by the river in Siolim. Book a 5:30 PM table, watch the light go over the water, and stay on for dinner: Greek at Thalassa, Thai at Fireback, South Indian at Hosa.

Assagao or PanjimDinner

Candlelight in an old Goan house

Jamun or Gunpowder in Assagao, or Viva Panjim for Goan food in Fontainhas, Panjim's old Latin quarter. Old houses and candlelight, and no view needed.

Book ahead, and from mid-December to early January book well ahead.

Chapora or MandoviFrom 5:30 PM

A sunset on the water

A small boat on the Chapora, or a cruise on the Mandovi from Panjim: the lively Goa Tourism hour with Goan folk dances, or a quieter 90-minute cruise into the mangroves.

Arrive early for good seats on the Mandovi cruises.

SiolimDusk

Sunset under the Siolim bridge

Walk the Vaddy road along the Chapora to the old ferry point, now used only by fishermen, and join the locals who gather under the bridge as the light goes.

It costs nothing, and it's the village's own sunset spot.

Mornings, before anyone else is up

The quietest Goa is the early one. These three are worth setting an alarm for, and each is best finished with a slow breakfast.

Take the free ferry from Old Goa to an island of paddy fields and old houses, with the Piedade church on its hill, and picnic in the fields.

There are few shops on the island, so bring breakfast and water.

A slow morning at Sweet Water Lake

A spring-fed lake just behind the sea at Arambol's northern end, with jungle rising behind it. Walk over the rocks early, when it is just you and the jungle.

It's about a 20-minute walk over rocks, so wear proper shoes.

Fontainhas at first light

Panjim's Latin quarter before the city wakes: ochre, blue and green houses, chapels, tiled street names and hillside steps.

People live here, so keep voices low.

If you'd rather ride than walk, a guided e-bike loop of Divar, three hours past paddy fields, a hilltop church, temple ruins and old houses, starts near Old Goa at 8 AM or 3 PM. The island and its neighbours are in Old Goa and Ponda.

Something to make together

Two of Goa's gentlest experiences for two are hands-on, and both end at a table.

Two early starts worth the effort

These take a whole morning or a late night, and more planning. Palolem is a long day from the north, so pair the boat with a night or two in the south.

PalolemOct to May

An early boat to Butterfly Beach

Two small forest-backed coves, Butterfly and Honeymoon, reached by boat from Palolem or Agonda, often with dolphins on the way. Leave Palolem around 7:30 AM to beat the tour boats.

Agree the price first, and wear the life jackets.

Stars at Querim

Goa's dark northern tip: a quiet beach where the Tiracol river meets the sea, at its best within a few nights of a new moon.

There are no lifeguards. Stay out of the water and away from the river mouth, and bring a torch for the way back.

Aim for the nights around these dates, when the moon is thin or down. A free state ferry also crosses the river from Querim to Tiracol Fort, if you'd like to make a day of it.

After dinner: jazz and a nightcap

If the night isn't over, two small places keep it going with live music. Both are best reached by taxi.

Outdoor music stops at 10 PM in Anjuna and Vagator, so late evenings are indoors. More bars, and the big nights, are in Goa after dark.

When to go, and when the sun sets

The dry season, from about October to May, is when these ideas work. The boats to Butterfly Beach run October to May, Querim's dark skies are for November to March, and January brings clear skies and cool evenings. December and January are the busiest months, so book dinners ahead from mid-December to early January.

Getting home safely
