What we chose for a small studio beside the river in Siolim, and why it suits the place: deep greens, warm wood, white linen and a balcony over the river, palms and fields.

Rivara is a 650 sq ft studio beside the river in Rai, Siolim, and the way it's put together takes its cue from what lies beyond the balcony: the greens of the palms and fields, warm light, and the pace of a village that's best without a checklist. This is what we chose, and why it suits the place.
It is the first home of The House of Nivak, so it's also the first test of the House's one idea, place first: a home should belong where it is.
Rivara at a glance
The name comes from the place. Every House of Nivak home is named for where it is, and Rivara comes from “river”. Its own small mark is two waves, and its full name is Rivara by The House of Nivak, or simply Rivara, Siolim.

Why so much green?
From the balcony, nearly everything you see is green: coconut palms, and the fields beyond them. In the monsoon it all turns deeper still. The studio's strongest colour is green too, and it suits the place: by day it carries the view indoors, and in the evening, with the curtains drawn and the warm lights on, it makes a small room feel held rather than bare.
It is also the House's own colour: The House of Nivak's accent is a deep forest green. At Rivara, the greens run through the room like this:

- Green velvet on the sofa, softened with a mustard throw.
- Olive in the curtains, drawn in the evening.

Warm wood, white linen and warm light
Against the greens, everything else stays warm and plain. The wood is walnut: a floating nightstand by the bed, a floating console under the TV, the bathroom vanity, and the shelf in the hallway where the towels wait, rolled. The bed is made with crisp white hotel-style linen, the simplest promise a bed can make: you can see that it's fresh.
Light matters as much as material. Warm reading lights sit over the headboard, and room-darkening blinds keep late mornings dark. Warm light is one of the small things the House holds to, with good linen, a proper kettle and a desk that works.

Goa on the walls, and only there
Rivara is in Goa and doesn't pretend otherwise, but the place lives in the frames rather than everywhere. Above the bed is a triptych of Goa's coast, and by the sofa hang two framed prints, one of Goa and one titled Wander. That's rootedness with a light hand: enough to know where you are, never a theme.
A desk by the window and a kitchenette that works
A studio made for slower days still has to work on an ordinary Tuesday, and Rivara does: there's a proper desk and chair by the window, with Wi-Fi at 75 Mbps, and a kitchenette you can cook in: an induction cooktop, a microwave, a fridge with a freezer, a kettle and coffee, a sandwich griller, basic cookware, plates, glasses and cutlery.
The practical things make longer stays easy, and stays of 28 nights or more are welcome: a fully automatic washing machine on the balcony, an iron, an open wardrobe with a full-length mirror, air conditioning and a ceiling fan. The balcony and its view
The balcony is where Rivara makes the most sense. Two chairs, a drinks ledge and a view over the river, palms and green fields: it's made for slow mornings with coffee from the kettle, and for watching the rain move across the fields in the monsoon.
Who Rivara suits
- It suits couples and solo travellers: it sleeps two, in one double bed.
- It suits people working remotely, with a desk, a stated Wi-Fi speed and long stays of 28 nights or more welcome.
- It suits anyone who wants slow mornings and quiet evenings, with the beaches within reach rather than at the door.
- It doesn't suit groups or families of more than two, or pets, for now.
- It doesn't suit anyone who needs step-free access: it's on the first floor, reached by stairs.
