Each home takes its cue from its landscape, from the materials, the weather, the light and the pace around it, rather than from a theme, a trend or the last home we made.
That rules out a great deal. No beach theme in the mountains, no mountain lodge by the sea, no grey sofa that could be anywhere. What carries from one home to the next is a feeling rather than a look: calm, warm, private and honest, in places worth slowing down for. The House's promise is simply a small pause from everything else.
What “place first” means in a home
It starts outside the door. At Rivara, our first home, place first means river light, monsoon greens and the easy pace of Siolim, a village on the river in North Goa. Inside, deep green velvet, warm walnut and crisp white linen sit easily beside the palms and fields beyond the balcony. How Rivara came together tells that story room by room.
Rootedness is done with a light hand: local light, materials and rhythm, never a costume. A new home never borrows the last one's palms, colours or artwork.

The six values, and what each one decides
The House holds to six values. They're working rules rather than words on a wall: each one decides something real, from what goes in a room to what goes in a listing, and what gets left out.

Honesty as a practice: the listing is a promise
Of the six values, honesty is the one a guest can check, so the House treats a listing as a promise. It never claims a distance, a view, a speed, a policy or an amenity the home can't back up, and when a listing changes, the website changes the same day. Photographs are taken in warm light and at true proportions, because a photograph of a room is a claim about it.
In practice, that means telling you the useful things and the less glamorous ones before you ask. Here is what Rivara's page tells you up front:
- The Wi-Fi speed: 75 Mbps, a number rather than “fast Wi-Fi”.
- Every room: the studio, the balcony and its view, the kitchenette, the bathroom and the entrance are all photographed.
- The water: Rivara is beside the river in Siolim, not the sea. The beaches of Morjim and Ashwem are across the bridge.
- The size and the stairs: 650 sq ft for up to two guests, on the first floor and reached by stairs.
- The camera: one security camera covers the building entrance, and there are none inside the studio.
- The rating: the website shows none until there's a real one. A made-up trust signal is worse than none.

How a home joins the House
The House grows slowly on purpose. A home joins only when it passes three tests, the ones set out on our homes page.

Behind the three sits a quieter condition: a new home must be one that can be looked after with the same care as the first. Nivedita, who founded the House and runs it herself, would rather open one home done properly than ten done quickly.
The mark and the line: same sun, different stories
The mark of The House of Nivak is an arched doorway with the sun rising on the horizon inside it: a home that frames its place, and the one sun every home shares. The line that goes with it is Same sun. Different stories. Wherever the homes are, the same sun rises over them; what changes is the story each place tells, and the one you take home.
Names follow the same idea: each home carries its own name, taken from its place, with the House after it.
