Dudhsagar and the Western Ghats: Goa's waterfalls, forests and oldest temple
Inland, Goa climbs into forest, waterfalls and ancient temples. How to reach Dudhsagar the right way, what else the hills hold, and what changes when the rain comes.

The way to see Dudhsagar is by jeep safari from Collem, between roughly late October and May, and the earlier you arrive the better, because the number of jeeps is capped each day. Walking the railway line to the falls is banned. Around it, the Western Ghats hold Goa's oldest temple, a pond that bubbles, a string of smaller falls and, from June, the deep green of the monsoon.
This is the far side of Goa from the beaches: the coast gives way to forest and waterfalls in the east, where Goa meets Karnataka and Maharashtra in the hills. From Siolim, Dudhsagar is a full day, so leave early, or choose a shorter trip into the hills and pair it with a spice farm lunch in Ponda.
How to see Dudhsagar
Dudhsagar means 'sea of milk'. The falls drop in four tiers on the Mhadei, or Mandovi, river, inside the Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary and Mollem National Park, and the railway between Vasco da Gama and Belagavi runs past them. They are about 60 km from Panjim by road, and about 10 km from Collem, where the forest track begins.
The jeep safari, step by step
- Leave earlyIt is a long drive inland. Aim to reach Collem, also spelled Kulem, as early as you can: jeeps are capped each day.
- At CollemThe safari jeeps start here, and run roughly from late October to May.
- Through the forestAbout 10 km of forest track through the sanctuary to the foot of the falls.
- At the fallsFollow the forest staff, stay where you are allowed to stand, and take care on wet rock.
- AfterPair it with Tambdi Surla, in the same forest, or a spice farm lunch in Ponda if you are back before the 4 PM close.
Tambdi Surla and the Mollem forest
The Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary and Mollem National Park together cover 240 square km, the largest protected area in Goa, across the Sanguem and Dharbandora talukas. Tiger, leopard, sloth bear, gaur, sambar and barking deer live here, and the birds and butterflies are rich.
Tambdi Surla Mahadev Temple
A small Shiva temple in dark basalt, carved in the Kadamba style from stone carried over the hills from the Deccan. Built in the twelfth or thirteenth century (sources differ), it is the oldest temple in Goa, and it survived because it stood in a clearing deep in the forest.
Still a place of worship: remove your shoes and keep voices low. Mahashivratri is its great festival.

The hills in the monsoon
The monsoon, June to September, is when the hinterland is most spectacular: full waterfalls, deep green forest and mist on the ghats. It is also when the rules matter most, and when some trips stop.
